Белые Негры

Архиепископ Виталий Устинов (+ 2006)

His Eminence Metropolitan Vitaly’s article “White Negroes” may be the only extant example of an emigre Russian hieararch’s writing on the charged racial issues of the late 1960′s and early 70′s. A contemporary reader might note the expression within the article of attitudes that would today be perceived as racially insensitive. A more sympathetic reading will also reveal the attitude of compassion which, in spite of the Russian-Canadian hierarch’s limited experience of African-American culture, informs his assessment of their spiritual plight. Although shaped by his own political and historical experience, the Metropolitan’s concern for the spiritual future of the nations was not limited to members of his own cultural identity, but extended to to all peoples.

Deacon Andrei Psarev

The 1964 Council of the Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad (ROCOR) marked a new milestone in its history: on May 27, 1964 Metropolitan Anastasii (Gribanovskii) retired. In 1915, Anastasii was appointed Bishop of Chisinau and Khotin. He designed the rite of installation of St. Tikhon as Patriarch of Moscow on November 21, 1917. On December 7, 1917, the local council of the Russian Church elected him a member of the Synod of Bishops.

Metropolitan Anthony Khrapovitskii
