On June 12, 2026 Priestmonk Alexei (Lisenko) reposed in the Lord in Chicago.
Father Alexei was born in France into a White Russian émigré family and grew up in San Francisco during a time when Russian Orthodox Christians of different jurisdictions often lived as one close-knit community. Although his family belonged to North American Metropolia he knew ROCOR’s people of his age, like the late Archbishop Peter (Lukianoff) of Chicago and Mid-America.
A devoted monk, priest, and translator, Father Alexei made a valuable contribution to the work of ROCOR Studies. He translated a number of important materials, helping to make the history and heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia accessible to a wider audience. His work formed an important part of our shared efforts, and he was a valued member of our team.
Responding to the offer to translate the article on the history of St. Job of Pochaev Brotherhood he wrote, “the entire article in question with particular interest, since my parents lived in Slovakia between 1928 and 1945 and were frequent pilgrims to Ladomirovo, which they reminisced about with great fondness.. In fact, they were well acquainted with the future Archbishop Seraphim and Metropolitan Vitaly (whose 1955 visit as a newly-consecrated bishop to us in San Francisco I still remember).. “
Father Alexei was a member of the Monastery of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco in California. Among his most notable translations were the English edition of Memoirs of Metropolitan Evlogy, published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, and Fr. Kiprian Kern’s Reminiscenses of Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky), which we published this website, along with many other important works.
We shall miss him greatly.
