The last update I sent you was in the late October from Vienna, Austria. As for last month, I spent a large part of it enjoying my remaining time with my family there.
|
For my namesday on November 9, I went to Stuttgart. It was great to be part of the St. Nicholas Cathedral family for one weekend. I was able to speak there about something that is important to me: the ministry of laypeople in the Russian Church Abroad. For another weekend in November, I was at the ROCOR cathedral in London to give the same talk to the congregation there, whom I know well.

Besides the materials posted below, this month, I was able to edit my interview with the Mitred Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff, recorded in Munich last December. Our long-time translator, Fr. Alexis (Lisenko), has been working on making it available to you in English soon. During the same visit to Munich in December 2023, I recorded an interview with Fr. Alexei Lemmer, another priest of the ROCOR German Diocese. The interview was translated into English and prepared for publication by the seminarian and ROCOR Studies associate John Kurr.
|
We also offer for your consideration three interviews taken by graduate students as part of the HTOS course on The Russian Church Abroad: Its History and Identity, and edited for publication on the site: with Archbishop Peter (d. 2024), Archimandrite John Townsend, and with Matushka Maria Kotar.

This year, ROCOR Studies’ major raison de célébrer is a breakthrough with posting an index for all the articles published in the ROCOR’s flagship periodical Pravoslavania Rus between 1928–2005. One of the very first articles on our site in 2008 was a news item about the completion of work on this very index by Reader Dmitry Anashkin (d. 2018). A proper note explaining all who contributed to this accomplishment is going to be written in due time. For now, suffice to say that the last leg of this journey would not have happened without the tireless work of the ROCOR Studies associate Dr. Walker R. Thompson (Heidelberg University, Germany). Our goal is to make this Index publicly available by the end of this year, as soon as some final data cleansing tasks have been completed and one or two minor technical bugs fixed. We hope that it will serve the needs of the global research community and all those interested in the history of the ROCOR and Russian diaspora.

I am delighted to see that our Serbian conference continues to make waves. Hegumen Gabriel from Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia recently created an interactive database illustrating the paper given in Belgrade in 2021 by Prof. Andrei V. Popov, titled “Archival Heuristics and the History of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad”. Fr. Gabriel’s valuable work is presented in a converted and slightly condensed format on our site.

We thank you for your continuing interest and wish you a peaceful end to the year. If you believe that what we do is meaningful, consider supporting us a donation – any amount, no matter how small, can make a difference in our work.
