ROCOR-STUDIES
Dear reader,

Today, the Western European Diocese, now headquartered in London, celebrates the Synaxis of the British Saints.

These ancient Orthodox saints became known to us in large part thanks to the efforts of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, who served for eleven years as the ruling hierarch of the Western European Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

To mark this commemoration—celebrated this year on July 5 (New Style)—we are pleased to offer two reflections.

In his review of a recently published memoir, Reader Andrei Fastovsky of Munich walks a careful line between reverence for a great and universal saint of the Orthodox Church and a thoughtful historical reconstruction of what it may have been like for ordinary people to work closely with him.

In another piece, Fr. Lawrence Cunningham, a recent graduate from the Philippines, offers a personal meditation on St. John’s time on the island of Tubabao.

I warmly greet you on this day in honor of an extraordinary saint—one whom God revealed to the world through the Russian Church Abroad.

Holy Hierarch John, pray to God for our work here!

Thank you for your continued interest,

Protodeacon Andrei
