ROCOR-STUDIES
Dear reader,

Indeed Christ is Risen!

All the active members of the ROCOR have been occupied with unexpected repose of our first hierarch Metropolitan Hilarion. His Eminence passed away on Monday, May 16, and on Sunday, May 22 he was buried among the brethren behind the altar of the cathedral of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. His Eminence was consecrated bishop in 1984, becoming the last bishop consecrated during Metropolitan Philaret’s tenure. The next year he passed away and, in the USSR, Perestroika started to take the place. Thus, with the departure of Metropolitan Hilarion and the war between Russia and Ukraine we face a transition from one historical phase into another. In September bishops will elect the successor to Metropolitan Hilarion and their choice will affect the entire Russian Church Abroad. Be this as it may I hope that the Savior's words that “the gates of Hade will not prevail against the church” (Mat.16:18) are also applicable to us.
