ROCOR-STUDIES
Dear reader,

Greetings on the feast of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco! For me, St. John represents the Russian Church Abroad at its very best. As a newly consecrated hierarch, St. John became, as it were, both mother and father for often disoriented and demoralized Russian stateless refugees in the international city of Shanghai. With all his life he "walked the talk", epitomizing the words of the troparion for a hierarch saint: "a rule of faith, a model of meekness". Following in the steps of St. Nicholas of Myra, St. John was also zealous about the Church's traditions.

I had a busy June. My trip to the archives of the Russian YMCA was productive. I am now working on making a new introductory class on the history of the Russian Church for St. Athanasius College. As you will read in the newsletter, I had an excellent visit to Ontario.

Your support allows me to carry on with my projects. Thank you to all who responded to my appeal for additional funds.

They stayed at this place until in 1960 when they acquired their current residence in Brondesbury Park. (Caption: N. Mabin, source: internetsobor.org)

On the Question of Clergy Compensation in The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia: Canonical Considerations

From the Editor This paper has been written for Canon Law-725, a graduate-level class offered at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in Jordanville, NY during the Spring semester of 2022. The former student approaches the issue from theological and historical perspectives, while there are implications that affect people's lives: families of clergy become hostages of poverty. I do not believe that …

On June 10 I am leaving for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne to work with the archives of Paul B. Anderson who spent his 48-year career working with the YMCA’s International Committee. He lived in Russia during the …
