Greetings on the Meatfare week!
I am sorry I haven't updated this website since the end of January. I have been "working" almost daily to complete my family's move from Moscow to Vienna. We have almost completed the legal process, and I have begun catching up on other things.
One year ago, the army of the Russian Federation crossed into Ukrainian territory, thus escalating the inner conflict that followed the 2014 revolution in Kyiv. From the beginning of this war, my position was to keep calm and write only what I was comfortable saying, and I have no regret about this stance.
|
This conflict has highlighted a clash in Orthodoxy between ideology and theology, Roman imperial legacy, and individual Christian ethics. At the same time, I do my best to perceive things as philosophically as I can. I realize that it is unrealistic to expect a patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church to protest against a war that the government of his country conducts. While I oppose this imperialist war, at the same time, I cannot endorse the treatment by the Ukrainian authorities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Below I have included links to the relevant materials which we posted on this website beginning with 2015.
Thank you for your continuing interest,

Church-State Relations in Ukraine: Back to Rzeczpospolita?

In this podcast, Dr. Andrei Psarev speaks about the Metropolitan Meletiy of Chernivtsi within the context of the campaign in Ukraine against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This war is unjust, but at the same time, it does not give one license to ignore the injustices of a different nature and level perpetrated for years against the UOC

Conciliar Movement in Ukraine in 1917–1921. History Does Not Repeat Itself, but Patterns Do
|
A historian may argue that the Bolshevik regime had assaulted the Russian Orthodox Church as part of the imperial state apparatus. Still, no reasonable Christian would challenge the sanctity of New Martyrs manifested as the result of this persecution. Although no persecution on that scale is taking place in Ukraine, I believe the Church there will attract many as it did in Russia by showing them the face of genuine Christianity
