ROCOR-STUDIES

Dear reader,

Today is Forgiveness Sunday. The saying has it that every doctor has a cemetery. The same rings true for an educator. When you teach, speak publicly, and write, avoiding mistakes, misunderstandings, and confusion is impossible. And I ask all whom I’ve scandalized to forgive me.

For some years, we have had a graduate class at Holy Trinity Seminary, Russian Church Abroad: Its History and Identity-723. This class studies ROCOR from the perspective of anthropology. Assignments for this class include an interview and a research paper. I am delighted to share two successful works submitted for this class taught at Jordanville last fall.

Archpriest Stephan Pavlenko: Pastoral Perspectives on the Reunification

For more than eighty years, the identity of the Russian Church Abroad was defined by her attitude toward the Moscow Patriarchate. Therefore, it is understandable that in 2007 not all of us could rapidly evolve into a stance of reconciliation. We are still responsible for our former brothers and sisters. And one may hope our bishops will decide to begin a dialogue with them soon.

Good Ecumenism and Bad Ecumenism According to Fr. Alexander Schmemann

We sometimes assess Orthodox participation in the ecumenical movement by the number of people converted to the Church. This paper was written for History and Identity of the Russian Church Abroad 725, a graduate class offered at HOTS. This research shows the importance of informing non-Orthodox Christians about correct beliefs and that an Orthodox theologian can participate in ecumenical work without subscribing to the branch theory.

Два дня братского общения в Дикси

Полагаю, что будущее РПЦЗ в США за такими общинами, как эта.

Two Days of Fellowship in Dixie

A visit to this parish in Tenessee convinced me that to set priorities right; we need to focus on theology and reject ideologies.
