ROCOR-STUDIES

Dear reader,

Recently, in an article about this May’s celebration of the centennial of St. Nicholas Church in Brisbane, Australia, I read about a jubilee event marking a visit of the Russian Imperial prima ballerina Anna Pavlova to Brisbane in the 1920s. To find out more about her, I went to Wikipedia (which there is nothing wrong about doing!) and learned that she died in 1931. Her desire to be cremated was fulfilled, and a memorial service for the rest of her soul took place in the Russian Church in London. This immediately brought me to the matter of the ban on cremation issued by the ROCOR bishops in 1932.

The second piece concerns a troubled time in our 20th-century history. It is
a small treatise from 1943 by Count Yuri P. Grabbe, promoting conspiracy theories and praising Hitler for his hatred of Jews. During World War II, most ROCOR members found themselves in territories controlled by the Axis powers and their allies. This made it so hard for someone like Saint Alexander Schmorell, another member of the ROCOR, to say what he believed was right. He was executed by guillotine in Munich in the same year of 1943 – just a few months before Count Grabbe published his pamphlet in former Yugoslavia.

On the Question of Incineration of Bodies of the Departed In Crematoria

The issue of cremation is becoming more and pressing since it is getting more difficult in some countries for not wealthy members of the ROCOR to have a full burial.

Определение по вопросу сжигания тел умерших в крематориях

Вопрос о кремеции чад Русской Православной Церкви становится все более острым в связи с тем что в некоторых странах несостоятельным людям почти невозможно быть погребенным полностью.

At the Twilight of Jewish Power

This composition shows that besides an anti-Sergianist bent, there was also an anti-Semitic one among some members of the ROCOR.
