Deacon Andrei Psarev successfully completed his examinations at Queen's University Belfast (Norther Ireland) and was thereby qualified to register as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. On the evening of the same day he gave a forty-minute presentation at the School of History and Anthropology at Queen's University on his doctoral research. This talk took place under the auspices of the "Byzantium in Belfast" seminar series hosted by the Institute of Byzantine Studies at the same university. More information here.

Deacon Andrei Psarev, instructor of canon law at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary, attended an international congress on eastern ecclesiastical law organized by the Society for the Law of Eastern Churches at Vienna University, Austria. The main focus of this thought-provoking conference, held in Athens under the auspices of the Church of Greece, was the Orthodox diaspora. Participants included Dr. Spyros Troianos, Archpriest Dr. Vladislav Tsypin, Dr. Constantine Pitsakis, and Dr. Lewis Patsavos. The Fund for Assistance to the Russian Church Abroad enabled Deacon Andrei Psarev to meet with colleagues, inform them about his research on Canon 15 of the First and Second Council (861), and answer their questions about the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

The first two-volume (872 page) reference work in English on the Eastern Orthodox Church has been published by Wiley-Blackwell. The Encyclopedia of Eastern Orthodox Christianity was edited by the  Rev. Fr. John McGuckin and  contains essays by seventy authors. Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary is represented by Hierodeacon Samuel (Nedelsky) -- a former member of the faculty who contributed articles on Dostoesvsky, education, and Imiaslavie -- and by Deacon Andrei Psarev, currently an instructor at Holy Trinity Seminary, who contributed articles on the topics of canon law, canonization, exarch, excommunication, and repentance.

New York, December 10, 2010. Holy Trinity Seminary Receives New Archival Collections

There was a formal exchange of microfilmed documents at the Russian consulate in New York in conjunction with the 90th anniversary of the Russian Church Abroad. Holy Trinity Seminary (HTS) received copies of archival collections of St. John of Kronstadt and Archpriest Georgii Shavel'skii, a maverick emigre clergyman (on the photo, d. 1951 in Bulgaria). HTS was represented by Dean Fr. Vladimir Tsurikov, Director of the Archives, and the Russian side by Mrs. A.N. Artizov, Head of the Russian Archive Agency and S. V. Mironenko, Director of the State Archive of the Russian Federation -- Gosudarstvennyi arkhiv Rossiiskoi Federatsii (GARF). HTS transferred to GARF copies of the collections of the Russian Orthodox scholars, V.A Maevskii and Priest Stefan Liashevskii.

The arrival of the Shavelskii collection in Jordanville reinforces an earlier transfer of his documents to the Bakhmeteff Archive at Columbia University. This productive cooperation will continue: the HTS  Archive is expected to receive from Moscow copies of the archives of the  All-Russian Council of 1917-1918, as well as a number of interesting collections from Hoover Archive at Stanford.

On September 17, 2010, in conjunction with the 90th anniversary of the State Archive of the Russian Federation -- Gosudarstvennyi arkhiv Rossiiskoi Federatsii (GARF) -- there was a formal exchange of documents in Moscow. Archpriest Vladimir Tsurikov, Director of Archives of Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY, provided GARF with microfiche collections of documents pertaining to V.K. Abdank-Kossovskii, P.N. Krasnov, and S.V. Denisov. GARF Director Sergei V. Mironenko provided the Holy Trinity Seminary archive collection with microfiche copies of the archives of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (1921 - 1945), the archives of Metropolitan Eulogy Georgievskii  (d. 1945) and those of the Provisional Supreme Church Authority in the South of Russia (1919).

Archbishop Vitaly’s entire life was a labor of obedience to Christ’s Church, to which he devoted his whole life without exception. The fruits of his service were the Pochaev publishing brotherhoods in Germany, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. Pravoslavnaya Rus’ (Orthodox Russia) and Holy Trinity Seminary are two legacies of Vladyka’s that we use to this day. Our especially dearest gift from Archbishop Vitaly, to use the expression of Archpriest Andre Papkov, is our ever-memorable Vladyka, Metropolitan Laurus, for whom Archbishop Vitaly served as a guiding beacon his entire life. The history of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia includes many insufficiently explored areas. Unique photos posted on the blog of Reader Michael, from the ROCOR's British Diocese, cast light on one such terra incognita: ROCOR's experiment with the western liturgical rite. These photos show St. John of Shanghai celebrating the Divine Liturgy according to the Western Orthodox tradition and Bishop Jean of St. Denis (d.1972), whose ecclesiastic group was received into the Russian Church Abroad in 1960 by initiative of St. John.

In 2007 St. Tikhon’s Humanitarian University published Andrei Kostriukov's Русская Зарубежная Церковь в первой половине 1920-х годов (The Russian Church Abroad in the First Half of the 1920s). This monograph reviews in detail the circumstances of the establishment of ROCOR and studies groundbreaking events that have not previously been adequately analyzed, including the transition of the Higher Church Authority from lay-clergy-bishop membership to bishop membership only. The study is based primarily on archival sources preserved in archives such as those of the Synod of Bishops in New York and of the Department of External Affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate in Moscow.

St. Tikhon's Orthodox Humanitarian University in Moscow has published a new book by Viktor Kosik, Русское церковное зарубежье: ХХ век в биографиях духовенства от Америки до Японии (The Russian Church Diaspora in Biographies of its Clergy from America to Japan, Moscow 2008). The author is a specialist in Balkan studies and who used to teach a course on the history of Russian church emigration at St. Tikhon's University. In 2000 he published his findings on the Russian Church in Yugoslavia in the period from 1920 through the 1940s. This new study, a work of more than 400 pages, represents an ample spectrum of clergy belonging to various ecclesiastical jurisdictions. These clergy and monastics were born in Russia and left the country before WWII. We hope that many more biographies will be appended to the second edition of this valuable book. Archpriest Peter Perekrestov from San Francisco and Nun Vassa (Larin) from Munich helped the author to gather relevant information. Interview with the author (in Russian).

А.В. Псарев закончил 15-летний сбор материалов для книги посвященной биографии архиепископа Леонтия (Филипповича). В судьбе Владыки Леонтия отразились противоречия истории Русской Церкви в ХХ веке. В СССР ему привелось быть свидетелем борьбы с обновленчеством, декларации митрополита Сергия, самому пережить аресты и заключение, испытать жизнь в подполье. Будучи рукоположенным во епископа Бердичевского в 1941 году (УПЦ-МП), епископ Леонтий должен был строить церковную жизнь в условиях нацистской оккупации и партизанской войны. В эмиграции его ждала встреча с архиерееями и церковными людьми с другим опытом и психологией, а также бедственное существование в Южной Америке. Архиепископ Леонтий продолжал то, что он считал борьбой за Православие, поддерживая ревнителей в среде РПЦЗ. катакомбных христиан в СССР и старостильников в Греции.
